GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 2, 2022) – The No. 21 Denison University women's lacrosse team earned a 16-9 win in North Coast Athletic Conference action over Allegheny College on Saturday.
It was the end of a three-game homestand for the Big Red inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium, a streak that saw Denison outscore its opponents 48 23 across the three contests. Additionally, Denison has now won eight straight against the Gators since 2014 and won its fourth in a row this season to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC. Allegheny, meanwhile, suffered its first road loss of the season at 4-1 and also fell to 6-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference after originally starting the season 6-0.
The Big Red led 4-0 to start the game before a goal by Allegheny with only seven seconds left in the first quarter, and then a pair of goals by
Jane Lukens and
Ryann Yospa in the final five minutes of the second quarter made it a 7-2 Denison lead at the break.
After two goals by the Gators to open up the second half and cut Denison's lead down to three at 7-4,
Casey McTague scored to make it 8-4 with 7:49 left in the third quarter.
Then after another goal by the Gators only 35 seconds later again made it a three-point game at 8-5, the Big Red attempted to put the game out of reach as back-to-back goals by
Josie Lucchesi started a stretch of four straight goals in less than two minutes to make it 12-5.
Allegheny, however, continued to battle, getting to within four at 12-8 after three straight goals in the final three minutes of the third quarter, but yet again, Denison had the answer with a 4-0 run.
McTague scored twice during Denison's 4-0 run in the fourth quarter and tallied the Big Red's final goal of the game to double up the score at 16-8 with just under five minutes remaining. She would finish the game with four goals and one assist.
Yospa added two goals and one assist, Lucchesi and
Anna Devuono both scored twice, and
Ashley Viglione and
Jane Lukens both had one goal and one assist.
In addition to making seven saves,
Maeve Caldwell did a great job preventing Allegheny from getting looks at the net as she finished with five caused turnovers.
Lastly,
Abby Van Metre led Denison with eight draw controls while
Ana Ortiz DeRosa had six draw controls and
Kate Coward had four draw controls and added four groundballs.
Denison's first NCAC game on the road during the current 2022 season is up next up as the Big Red prepare to play at Kenyon College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 9.
