GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 23, 2022) – The No. 20 Denison University women's lacrosse team defeated John Carroll University 14-5 to kick off a stretch of three straight home games on a wet and rainy day inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
Denison started the game with goals by
Casey McTague and
Maddie Morrell to lead it 2-0 just over five minutes in.
Then after John Carroll tied it at 2-2 just over a minute later, the Big Red scored four more goals to close out the first quarter, two each by
Ashley Viglione and
Jane Bailey, to make it 6-2 Denison.
The Big Red then scored the first four goals of the second quarter, all by four different players, to make it an 8-0 Denison run and a 10-2 lead before the Blue Streaks added a score with less than 30 seconds to go before halftime.
The Denison defense worked hard all game, liming John Carroll to less than two goals in each quarter and none in the fourth. Â
In the end, the game was called after a weather delay occurred with 1:03 left on the clock in the fourth quarter.
Maeve Caldwell played the first quarter in goal, making six saves compared to only two goals allowed.
Caroline O'Dea then played the next 32 and a half minutes making five saves and allowing three goals before freshman
Audrey Hughes made her college debut with 12:38 left in the fourth quarter and Denison leading 13-5. Hughes would go on to finish with three saves in her 11 and a half minutes of playing time.
Offensively, Denison was paced by Bailey with four points (2 goals, 2 assists) while McTague, Viglione and
Allaire Kotz each had two goals and one assist and Morrell had two goals.
Denison improves to 4-3 with the win and 3-0 all-time against John Carroll (1-4) with wins of six goals or more in both 2018 and 2019 as well.
Next up, the Big Red will continue their homestand with their first North Coast Athletic Conference game of the season against Ohio Wesleyan University at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 26.
