No. 15 baseball falls in high-scoring series opener against CWRU

CLEVELAND, Ohio (March 19, 2022) – The No. 15 Denison University baseball team dropped its series opener at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday, falling 16-12 in a high-scoring affair at Nobby's Ballpark.

Denison allowed Case to score six runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first inning.

Then after only collecting just two hits in the first four innings, the Big Red got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as Matt McClements hit a single and later scored thanks to a pair of wild pitches by the Spartans.

Denison's comeback attempt began in the top of the seventh inning when Payton Burch and Danny Alvarez both came up with a two-run singles.

Then in the top of the eighth, Denison again scored four runs, the final two of which came on another two-run single, this time by Ari Fierer to make it only a one-run game going into bottom of the eighth.

Unfortunately, Case responded with its second six-run inning of the game in the bottom of the eighth.

The Spartans had only three hits in the eighth inning, but scored their final four runs of the game on what proved to be a costly grand slam as Denison put together a two-out rally to score three runs in the top of the ninth that would have tied it if not for the grand slam.

Charlie Glennon was 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Eric Colaco and Burch were both 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.

Denison drops to 7-3 on the season with its second loss in a row while Case, which entered the series against the Big Red with seven losses in its last eight games after originally starting the season 3-0, improved to 5-8.

Denison and Case will now finish off the series with the Big Red's first doubleheader of the season tomorrow, Sunday, March 20, starting at 12 p.m. It will also be Denison's 2022 home opener and first pair of games on its new turf infield. In 2021, the Big Red and the Spartans battled eight times, with five of those eight games going in favor of Denison.
