No. 15 Denison beats Babson

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (March 15, 2022) – The No. 15 Denison University baseball team improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 during its current Spring Break trip at the Snowbird Classic following its 7-1 victory over Babson College on Tuesday.

Just as he has done so many times so far in the early going of the season, freshman Eric Colaco led off the game by getting on base and helping the Big Red score in the very first inning as he doubled down the left field line and scored with two outs on a single up the middle by Danny Alvarez.

Denison has now scored in the first inning in all eight games so far this season while Colaco has led off by getting on base and scoring the first run of the game in six of those instances.

After Alvarez's single to score Colaco, he then stole second base and scored on a single to right field by Jake Welsch to make it 2-0 Big Red.

Alvarez then kept the RBI's coming in the bottom of the third inning as Matt McClements led off with a single up the middle, Ari Fierer followed with another double down the left field line for Denison, and then Alvarez homered to left field to make it 5-0.

In all, Denison scored seven runs on 14 hits and had five doubles and four stolen bases. Alvarez finished 3-for-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored, Payton Burch was 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, and Colaco and Owen Wilson both finished with two hits as well.

Kenny Lippman (1-0) made his first start of the season and pitched the first five innings allowing just two hits and no runs while Jacob Pendergraft pitched three innings allowing one hit, one walk and one run. Henry Haack finished off the ninth inning recording three straight outs after allowing a leadoff single followed by a walk.

Tuesday was only the second meeting all-time and was the first meeting between Denison and Babson since 1998 (Denison won 9-7). The Beavers fell to 4-3 on the season after each of their first six games where decided by two runs or less, including a 5-4 win in 11 innings over Denison's NCAC foe Wooster on Monday.

Now, Denison's final game of the Snowbird Classic will be a rematch against Babson at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 17.
