PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (March 13, 2022) – The No. 22 Denison University baseball team lost for the first time during its current 2022 season, falling 10-8 against Arcadia University on Sunday during its second day at the Snowbird Classic.
After being held to two hits through the first four innings, Arcadia exploded for 10 runs on 10 hits in the final five innings to overtake the Big Red.
Eric Colaco led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to right center field, advanced to second on a walk by
Charlie Glennon, advanced to third on a groundout by
Dylan Hunter, and scored on an RBI-fielder's choice by
Ari Fierer to make it 1-0 Big Red. Colaco, a freshman from  Richfield, Ohio, has now led off with a home run, a double, a triple and a single in each of Denison's last four games.
Arcadia scored its first run in the top of the fifth inning and then took a 3-1 lead with a two-run single in the top of the sixth, but Denison answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth as RBI-singles by
Danny Alvarez and
Jake Welsch knotted it up at three runs apiece.
Then after two more runs for the Knights in the top of the seventh inning, the Big Red put up a four-spot on just two hits in the bottom of the seventh. They were two big hits, however, as the first was a two-run double by
Noah Leib, and the second was a two-out, two-run double by
Daniel Spencer.
Unfortunately, Arcadia scored four runs itself in the top of the eighth, giving them nine total runs over a four-inning span, and added one more run on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth.
In the final half inning, Leib led off with a single to right field and Fierer followed with a single to left field. Then with two outs and runners at the corners, Welsch singled to right field to score Leib, make it 10-8 and put the tying run on base, but a fly out to center field by the pinch hitter was all she wrote.
Welsch was 3-for-5 to lead the Big Red while Leib was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and Fierer was 2-for-5.
Denison falls to 4-1 with the loss while Arcadia improves to 10-2. The only previous meeting between the two teams was a 5-4 win for the Knights over the Big Red in the Snowbird Classic back during the 2017 season.
Day three from Port Charlotte, Florida, on Monday, March 14, will see the Big Red take on No. 4 North Central College at 11 a.m., followed by Sewanee at 2 p.m
