GETTYSBURG, Pa. (February 26, 2022) – The 2022 season opener for the Big Red women's lacrosse team featured a matchup between two top-12 teams in NCAA Division III, but in the end, it was No. 9 Gettysburg College that came out on top by a final score of 14-7 over No. 12 Denison University on Saturday.

Senior Casey McTague, who was named a Preseason Second-Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine, scored each of Denison's first two goals of the season as the Big Red scored three straight goals to end the first quarter and lead it 3-2.

Sophomore Josie Lucchesi then scored with 10 minutes left in the second quarter to make it 4-3 Denison before Gettysburg scored four straight in the final six and a half minutes of the period to take a 7-4 lead into the break.

The Bullets then doubled up their run to 8-0 with the first four goals of the third quarter before junior Jane Bailey scored her second goal with 3:20 left in the period.

In the fourth quarter, McTague scored Denison's first goal of the fourth quarter to record her hat trick, and then Bailey did the same on Denison's final goal of the game with five minutes left.

McTague also added two groundballs, two draw controls and two caused turnovers while sophomore Ana Ortiz DeRosa won four of Denison's nine draw controls and also had two groundballs.

In addition to starting its new season 0-1, Denison fell to 0-9 all-time against Gettysburg. which improved to 3-0 on the season with wins over the No. 8 and No. 12 nationally-ranked teams in NCAA Division III already under its belt.

Next up, the Big Red will wrap up back-to-back road games on back-to-back days in the state of Pennsylvania to open their 2022 season by squaring off against Dickinson College at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 27, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
