Women’s basketball wins regular-season finale at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. (February 19, 2022) – The Denison University women's basketball team won 70-49 on the road at Allegheny College in its final game of the 2021-22 regular season, and will now set its sights on the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament next week.

After taking a two-point lead (33-31) after halftime thanks to a 3-pointer by Gabby Elliott assisted by Maddie Goodman, Denison never look back and scored six straight to open the third quarter and expand their lead to eight at 39-31. Denison outscored Allegheny 21-8 in the third quarter and 16-10 in the fourth to bring home the victory.

The Big Red shot a fantastic 61.54 percent (8-13) from the field in the decisive third quarter while Allegheny was only 2-for-12 (16.67 percent) from the field in the period.

Mikaila Carpenter led a foursome of Big Red players in double figures in scoring with 17 points and 11 rebounds, which was good for the sixth double-double of her junior season so far.

Isa Contreras followed with 13 points and six rebounds while Goodman had 12 points and five rebounds and Elliott had 11 points. Elliott and Hannah Wynn both finished with four rebounds as well while Goodman, Wynn and Francesca Sileo all had four assists and Goodman and Wynn both had three steals.

Denison finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-13 and a conference mark of 7-8 while Allegheny dropped to 6-19 and 2-14, and will miss the postseason.

Now in the NCAC Quarterfinals, Denison will head to Springfield, Ohio, on Tuesday, February 22, as the No. 5 seed to battle the No. 4 seed, Wittenberg University. The Big Red fell 54-46 at home in its one meeting during the regular season against Wittenberg, which finished its regular season 15-7 overall and 10-4 in the conference after winning each of its final seven games.
