Men’s basketball wins regular-season finale over Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. (February 19, 2022) – The Denison University men's basketball team closed out its 2021-22 regular season with a 72-56 victory at Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon.

The Big Red scored 36 points in both halves and limited the Gators to only 21 points in the first half on 9-for-31 shooting (29.03 percent) from the field.

Denison was led in scoring for the second day in a row by Scotty Dean, who also sank six 3-pointers for the second game in a row and finished with 20 points and six rebounds.

Denison led 12-2 to start the game after back-to-back threes by Dean, and then after Allegheny got to within three at 21-18 with 8:21 left in the first quarter, the Big Red proceed to go on a 13-1 run to go up by 15 at 34-19 with three minutes left before halftime.

After the Big Red led by 15 points at the break, the only time Allegheny got back to within single digits in the second half was at 51-42 with under nine minutes left to play. Fortunately for Denison, Dean answered with two more 3-pointers as Denison was able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Tyler Miller finished with 16 points and five rebounds while Kevin Cheng had 14 points, Ricky Radtke had six points and eight rebounds, Freeman Brou had six points and seven boards, and Will Hunter had eight rebounds.

With the win, Denison finishes its regular season at .500 overall at 12-12 and is a strong 11-7 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, earning them the No. 5 seed in next week's conference tournament. Allegheny, meanwhile, dropped to 8-13 and 6-9, and will now enter the conference tournament as the No. 7 seed.

Denison will take on the No. 4 seed, Wittenberg University, in the NCAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday, February 22, in Springfield, Ohio. Wittenberg finished its regular season 13-11 overall and 11-6 in the league after playing one less conference game than the Big Red, who defeated the Tigers 69-55 on the road on January 17 before falling 75-72 in overtime inside Livingston Gymnasium on February 2.
