STUEBENVILLE, Ohio (November 22, 2022) – The Denison University women's basketball team earned its first true road win under new head coach
Maureen Hirt with a 68-54 victory at Franciscan University on Tuesday night at Steubenville High School.
Denison (3-2 overall) got off to a good start by outscoring Franciscan (1-3) 17-8 in the first quarter while shooting 50 percent (8-for-16) from the field, and then clinched the victory with a 21-12 advantage on 45 percent (9-for-20) shooting in the fourth quarter. Franciscan, meanwhile, made only a combined seven field goals between the first and the fourth quarters.
Leading by five (47-42) at the end of three quarters, Denison started off the fourth quarter with its first 3-pointer of the game (
Gabby Elliott) and then used another 3-pointer (
Maddie Goodman) followed by an offensive rebound and layup by
Mikaila Carpenter to go up by double digits at 55-44 less than two minutes into the period.
In the end, Goodman's 3-pointer ended up being the start of a 12-0 Big Red run to go ahead by 18 (62-44) on a jumper by
Brooke Toigo with under five minutes left to play.
The Big Red also finished with a 25-9 advantage on second-chance points and a 16-2 edge on fast break points.
Goodman led a balanced Big Red scoring attack with 13 points while
Abigail Westmeyer and
Ava Warcaba both had 10 points.
Elliott finished with nine points and a career-high nine rebounds while Carpenter and Toigo both matched her with nine points. In addition,
Hannah Wynn, scored four points while adding six rebounds, six assists and seven steals.
In all, Denison had five players with at least nine points and at least six rebounds.
Next up for the Big Red after the Thanksgiving Holiday will be a trip to Lexington, Kentucky, for the Transylvania Pat Deacon Classic. Denison will first battle against Maryville College at 5 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, before taking on either No. 2 nationally-ranked Transylvania University or Wilmington College on Sunday, November 27.
