BLUFFTON, Ohio (November 11, 2022) – The Denison University men's basketball team outscored the Beavers 20-2 to start the second half and used a dominate final 20 minutes to pick up its first win of the 2022-23 season, 66-42, at Bluffton College.
Denison (1-1 overall) trailed 16-8 10 minutes into the game after a 10-2 run for Bluffton (0-1), but a quick 8-2 run for the Big Red ending with a 3-pointer at the eight-minute mark by
Tyler Miller reduced the deficit to two at 18-16.
Denison would then re-capture the lead at 22-20 after an and-one by
Darren Rubin at the 5:33-mark in the first half.
Up 27-24 at the break, the Big Red ratcheted up the defense as they did not allow the Beavers to score their second bucket of the half until under the 10-minute mark in the game. The big run in the first 10 minutes of the period was a 14-0 stretch featuring a basket from five different Denison players over a six-and-a-half-minute span. That run brought Denison from up seven at 33-26 to a 21-point advantage at 47-26.
Denison would then see its lead grow to as large as 26 points (57-31) with an
Emmett Burnside layup with four and a half minutes left.
Both
Chase Ouellette and
Ricky Radtke would score in double figures for the Big Red, finishing with 14 and 11 points, respectfully, while Rubin would add with nine points. Ouelette did all of his damage with some very smooth moves in the second half while in total, 10 different Denison players would get into the scoring column in this one.
On the defensive end, the Big Red had nine steals on 17 Bluffton turnovers and outrebounded the Beavers 11-5 on the offensive glass, leading to advantages of 19-11 on points off turnovers and 15-3 on second chance points.
There will be little time to rest for the Big Red as they play at Ohio Northern University at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Nov. 12).
