OBERLIN, Ohio (October 8, 2022) – Thanks to a goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half by
Caroline Garrard, the Denison University women's soccer team defeated Oberlin College 1-0 on the road as the Big Red picked up the win in their first North Coast Athletic Conference match of the 2022 season.
Denison was the aggressor on offensive early on as
Ellie Reiser had a shot saved less than a minute in, and then at the five-minute mark, a header by Garrard was saved as well. In all, Denison had three shots on goal in the first 13 minutes of the match, each of which were saved by Oberlin's Benji Maddox, and then
Wynne Hague made her first save in the 23rd minute.
In the 27th minute, a free kick by
Kate Dalimonte hit the crossbar, and then chaos ensued as the ricochet was delivered into the goal for the Big Red, but an offsides call negated the goal.
Maddox made her fourth save of the first half on a shot by
Dulcie Heyes in the 29th minute.
Both teams finished with six shots in the first half while the Big Red held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal, but in the second half, Denison outshot Oberlin 9-3 and again put four shots on goal, one of which included the lone goal of the match by Garrard in the 55th minute.
Garrard would finish with a match-high four shots while Heyes added three shots and matched Garrard with two shots on goal.
In addition to earning its first road win of the season, Denison (2-7-2 overall, 1-0 NCAC) has now won each of its last four conference openers in shutout fashion, and has now won its fourth straight one-goal decision over Oberlin (6-4, 0-2). In 2021, it was Heyes who netted the game winner in overtime in the 93rd minute.
Next up, Denison will play at Wittenberg University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, before hosting Senior Day against Hiram College at 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 15.
