Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Big Red draw at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (October 12, 2022) – Tough weather conditions and two weather delays certainly played a part in a match that featured a total of only five shots and seven corner kicks. In the end, the Denison University women's soccer team finished with a 0-0 draw at Wittenberg University on a windy and rainy Wednesday night at Edwards-Maurer Field.

It was a matchup between two teams with very similar records as the Big Red moved to 2-7-3 overall and 1-0-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Wittenberg went to 2-7-4 and 1-0-1.

After playing a part in six matches so far this season, freshman Molly Noga made her first career start and did not have to face a shot attempt until making a save on the only shot of the night by Wittenberg in the 75th minute.

The first real opportunity for either team to score in the first half ended with an offsides call on the Tigers 10 minutes in that would have left Noga one-on-one against the attacking player.

Both teams displayed a suffocating defense in this one, which paired with a wet field and a 30-minute weather delay with 17 minutes to go in the first half, saw only one shot and two corner kicks, all by Denison, in the first 45 minutes.

Coming out of the first weather stoppage, Dulcie Heyes took the the first corner kick of the match in the 37th minute, and then Wittenberg nearly had a chance before another offsides call in the 41st minute.

Two minutes later, a bad touch by the Tigers passing the ball back toward their own goal led to a steal by Sophia Connell, who took the first shot of the match in the 43rd minute, but it was saved by Kate Wisniewski.

Then after another lengthy weather delay at halftime, neither team had a shot in the second half until Avery Butler hit the crossbar in the 71st minute.

After the save by Noga in the 75th minute, Callie Davis fired back-to-back shots that both had to be saved by Wisniewski in the 76th and 77th minutes.

Approaching the 10-and-a-half-minute mark in the match, a corner kick by the Tigers led to a header that was off target of the goal, and then in the final eight minutes, Kate Dalimonte did a great job of running down the sideline with an attacking player for Wittenberg and boxing her out at the endline to prevent a cross attempt.

As expected, it was a tight match throughout as the two teams came into the night with each of their last 10 matchups against each other being decided by only one goal.

Denison will now set its sights on Senior Day, which is slated for 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, against Hiram College on Barclay-Thomsen Field.
