GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 4, 2022) – A flurry of three goals in a four-minute span early in the second half was enough to propel the Denison University women's soccer team past Asbury University 4-0 as the Big Red picked up their first win of the 2022 season in what was also their final nonconference match of the regular season.
It was the first ever matchup between Denison (1-7-2 overall) and Asbury (2-9-1), which was coming off of back-to-back 4-0 losses at home against Centre College and DePauw University last week.
The Big Red equaled their season-goal total and picked up victory No. 1 of the 2022 season thanks to a season-high of 37 shots, which was more than double their previous season-high of 15 and was their most shots since shooting 40 shots back on October 28, 2014, in a 5-0 win at home over Oberlin College. Denison also fired 16 shots on goal against Asbury in addition to a stellar defensive effort that saw them control possession and limit the Eagles to only two attempts the entire match.
After the first shot of the match was saved by
Wynne Hague seven and a half minutes in, the Big Red had each of the next 14 shots in the first half and despite putting four of those shots on target, never really tested the Eagles' goalkeeper Maliya Crump, who did make four saves in the first 45 minutes. That would change in the second half.
Hague made her second save of the match in the 44th minute, and then
Molly Noga came in to play the second half for the Big Red.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Denison began to really threaten to score as a cross by
Caroline Garrard somehow found its way to
Dulcie Heyes, who's shot was saved by a diving Crump.
About 45 seconds later, another cross by Garrard was knocked off the post by Crump, leading to another shot for Heyes that was again saved by Crump, who found herself playing out of her mind to keep the match scoreless early in the second half.
In the 53rd minute, however, the connection from Garrard to Heyes finally paid off as a nice pass by
Amy Chiero got it to Garrard on the side, who's cross into the box was volleyed in by Heyes.
From there the floodgates opened as two and a half minutes later, the roll out by Crump was stolen by
Victoria Nielsen, who then stroked it from outside the box to make it 2-0.
The Big Red continued to pile it on as just over a minute later, Heyes passed it to Chiero, who then found Garrard in the box, who faked the shot to get around her defender and beat Crump to the bottom right to make it 3-0.
Heyes nearly had another goal with a shot that hit the crossbar in the 62nd minute, and then a nice save by Crump on a low corner shot in the 65th minute again denied Heyes.
In the 84th minute, Reiser settled the ball, took her time, and delivered a goal from just outside the box to the top right corner to make it 4-0.
In the end, Crump finished with 11 saves for the Eagles while Noga would end up getting her first career win despite not facing a shot during a second half in which Denison outshot Asbury 23-0.
Resier paced DU with eight shots while Heyes put five of her six shots on goal. Nielsen and
Callie Davis followed with five shots apiece while Garrard put three of her four attempts on goal.
Next up, Denison will try to carry its momentum into conference action as the Big Red open North Coast Athletic Conference play on the road at Oberlin College starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 8.
