GREENCASTLE, Ind. (October 29, 2022) – With a share of the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship on the line, the Denison University field hockey team came up short, 1-0, on the road at first-place DePauw University on Saturday afternoon.
With the result, Denison (11-5 overall, 6-2 NCAC) will enter the NCAC tournament as the No. 3 seed while DePauw (12-5, 8-0) finishes up an undefeated conference season.
The Big Red came out very aggressive with seven total shots and four shots on goal in the first quarter, including four total shots and three shots on goal by
Madeleine Hunt.
However, after only one shot from each team in the second quarter, it was the Tigers that found the back of the net with a goal off a penalty corner just under nine minutes into the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Denison had four penalty corners in the first four minutes, all by
Nina Casingal, while a pair of shots by
Kristin Kelley were both saved in the 49th and 52nd minutes, respectively.
Kelley had another shot blocked in the 54th minute, and then Denison's final attempt from Casingal was also blocked in the 56th minute.
The Big Red outshot the Tigers 12-3 overall and allowed only two shots on goal, but in the end, were unable to convert on one of their seven attempts on goal.
Entering the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed for the second year in a row, the Big Red return to action at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, as they head to Delaware, Ohio, to take on No. 2-seeded and the defending NCAC Tournament Champion, Ohio Wesleyan University (14-2, 7-1), in the semifinals. During the 2021 NCAC Tournament Championship, it was the Battling Bishops who came out on top, 2-1, in overtime against the Big Red.
