DELAWARE, Ohio (November 1, 2022) – The third-seeded Denison University field hockey team ended its 2022 season with a 1-0 defeat at second-seeded Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday at Shelby Stadium.
Despite giving up an early goal six and a half minutes into the game, the Big Red played great defense throughout, limiting the Battling Bishops to only six shots and keeping them out of the net of each of their four penalty corners.
Unfortunately, Denison just could not get anything going offensively as sophomore
Kristin Kelley and freshmen
Katherine Flanagan tallied the only two shots for the Big Red.
In the seventh minute, a long pass by OWU's Allie Crawford would find Emma Wright just inside the circle, who would finish into the bottom left corner of the goal for the lone score of the contest.
The Big Red would try to build some offensive momentum as they received two penalty corners in the second quarter, both taken by
Helen Breen, leading to their first shot by Kelley that was just wide in the 26th minute.
Denison would then take the first shot of the second half when Flanagan shot wide seven and a half minutes into the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Battling Bishops tried to extend their lead with a pair of shots just in front of the goal by Crawford in the 53rd minute, but both attempts were saved by the Big Red goalkeeper
Athena Joannou to keep it at a one-goal deficit.
In the end, however, OWU (15-2 overall) would continue to control possession of the ball and keep Denison (11-6) from getting an opportunity to try and tie it.
The Bishops, who have allowed only one goal all season long with 16 shutouts and who are now on an impressive eight-game winning streak, will advance to their second straight NCAC Tournament Championship game as they take on top-seeded DePauw University, which defeated Allegheny College 2-1 in the other NCAC semifinal game.
