Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey shuts out Earlham for fourth conference win

RICHMOND, Ind. (October 18, 2022) – In its first of two road games this week, the Denison University field hockey team saw Madeleine Hunt score her league-leading 12th goal of the season in the first quarter, and that was enough as the Big Red defense allowed only one shot all game and ultimately earned a 2-0 shutout victory on the road over Earlham College on Tuesday evening at Darrell Beane Stadium in Richmond, Indiana.

Denison (9-4 overall, 4-1 North Coast Athletic Conference) got its first shot of the game less than a minute in as Nina Casingal's attempt was saved by Earlham's Rachel Alma.

Then after back-to-back shots on goal by Kristin Kelley and Hunt in the seventh and eighth minutes were both saved by Alma, the Earlham defense came up with back-to-back blocks on shots by Kelley and Sunnie Fireman in the ninth and 11th minutes.

In all, Denison took six shots and had four shots on goal in the first quarter as Hunt scored on the final shot of the period and the assist by Kelley in the 12th minute.

Then to start the second quarter, back-to-back shots by Hunt and Katie Teates were saved by Alma in the 17th and 18th minutes before Teates converted on her first career goal to make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute.

Earlham's only shot of the game came in the 25th minute but was blocked away by the Big Red defense.

Hunt led the Big Red with four total shots and three shots on goal while Kelley added three shot attempts and Casingal and Teates both had two.

Although she did not face any shots on goal, Athena Joannou finished the game with her league-leading seventh shutout of the season.

Denison will finish off the week with a Friday evening game (Oct. 21) at Oberlin College starting at 4:30 p.m.
