Denison uses huge third quarter to win big at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio (October 21, 2022) – The Denison University Field hockey team traveled to Oberlin College for more North Coast Athletic Conference action and came away with a 6-0 victory thanks to an impressive four-goal third quarter. Senior Madeleine Hunt and freshman Nina Casingal would both score twice in the third quarter before fellow-freshman Isa van Scheppingen scored twice in the fourth quarter.

Denison (10-4 overall, 5-1 NCAC) outshot Oberlin (4-10, 1-5) 12-0 in the first half while also adding 10 penalty corners, but was unable to get on the scoreboard.

However, Denison finally cashed in just 18 seconds into the second half as Abigail Hano was able to find Casingal, who was sitting in front of the net and was able to slot the ball in between the goalkeeper's legs to notch her first career goal and make it 1-0.

Just one minute and eight seconds later, Hunt would be awarded a penalty stroke, and she did not waste the opportunity as she was able to slot the ball into the bottom left of the goal to extend the Big Red lead to 2-0.

Casingal would add her second goal of the quarter in the 39th minute as she was in the right spot at the right time. After a shot from Grace Lock was saved off the goalkeeper's shin pad, the ball found its way to Casingal, who had a wide-open net to make the lead 3-0.

Denison's fourth and final goal of the third quarter was Hunt's second of the period as in the 44th minute, she was able to get a shot off through traffic after taking her spot in front of the net and receiving the pass from Hano, who collected her second assist of the period.

Hunt now leads the NCAC with 14 total goals on the season, one more than Allie Crawford of Ohio Wesleyan University.

In the fourth quarter, van Scheppingen would score her first career goal after the ball found its way to her in the front of the net in the 49th minute, and then she became the third Big Red player with two goals on the day when Alexis Dumont found her in front of the goal for the chip in to make it 6-0 in the 52nd minute.

Athena Joannou recorded her third shutout in a row and obtained this one without facing a single shot. Now with 10 wins on the season, Joannou has helped lead the Big Red to eight shutouts.

Up next for the Big Red, they will travel back to Granville for their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday, October 26, at 4:30 p.m. against Wittenberg University.
