GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 19, 2022) – In what began as a matchup between two of the three teams atop the North Coast Athletic Conference standings with only one conference loss, the Denison University men's basketball team fell by a final score of 75-60 at home against the College of Wooster on Wednesday night.
Both teams began the day looking for their third win in a row, but it was Wooster that improved to 11-4 overall and 7-1 in the NCAC while Denison dropped to 6-7 and 5-2.
Tyler Miller scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds to pace the Big Red while
Ricky Radtke scored nine points and matched Miller with six boards.
John Faller matched Radtke with nine points while
Freeman Brou finished with eight points, five rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Despite Denison trailing by nine points three times in the first nine minutes of the game and allowing Wooster to shoot 56.67 percent from the field in the first half, Denison was able to get back into it and stay competitive thanks to timely 3-point shooting itself.
The Big Red missed each of their first eight attempts from long range before freshman
Cameron Smith converted his first 3-point make of the season to draw Denison to within four at 18-14 with nine minutes left until halftime.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by
Darren Rubin and Miller gave Denison its first lead of the ballgame up 22-21 with 6:51 left in the period, and then a three by Faller with four minutes left tied the game at 27-27.
Four and a half minutes into the second half, Miller hit a 3-pointer to get Denison to within one at 46-45 before Wooster responded with 10 straight points, including a big dunk in transition, to go ahead by 11 (56-45) with 11:43 left in the game.
Will Hunter hit a 3-pointer to stop the 10-0 Fighting Scots run, and then Denison got back to within four at 60-56 following a layup by Radtke with nine minutes left.
However, Denison proceeded to go 0-for-5 with four turnovers over the next five-plus minutes to fall behind by double digits at 66-56 with 3:50 remaining on the clock.
Denison will finish off the week on the road at Ohio Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, and then the Big Red will begin the next week at Kenyon College at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 24.
