LEXINGTON, Va. (September 5, 2021) – The Denison University field hockey team dropped its second straight nonconference game to open the season as the Big Red fell 3-0 on the road at Washington and Lee University.
Denison (0-2 overall) was limited to only four shot attempts, two by
Maya Tumiwa and one by both
Kristin Kelly and
Caitlin Ahearn, and had only one shot attempt on goal while Washington and Lee (2-0) had 31 total shots and 17 shots on goal.
After seven saves by
Maren Kraak through the first 28 minutes of the first half, the Generals first two goals came within a one-minute span of each other in the final two minutes before halftime. Washington and Lee's final tally then came just over four minutes into the third quarter.
Athena Joannou came into the goal to start the second half and matched Kraak with seven saves.
The Big Red will now return home to Deeds Field-Piper Stadium for a three-game homestand against Allegheny College on Saturday, September 11; against No. 17 Centre College the next day on Sunday, September 12; and against Wittenburg University the following weekend on Saturday, September 18.
