Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Big Red score twice in the second half to earn first win of 2021

GRANVILLE, Ohio. (September 11, 2021) – The Denison University field hockey team used a pair of second-half goals by seniors AC Veith and Maya Tumiwa to take down Allegheny College 2-0 in nonconference action on Saturday at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

Denison had four early shot attempts in the first quarter as the first two shots of the game, both by Tumiwa, were blocked before shots by Meg Baylis and Kristin Kelly were both saved.

Then after a slow second quarter that saw only two total shots, both by Denison, the Big Red put up five shot attempts on four penalty corners in the third quarter.

Late in the third quarter, Tumiwa ripped a shot from the top of the box that was saved by the Allegheny goalkeeper, Hallie Reiger. However, two minutes later, another save by Reiger off a shot from Abigail Hano was picked up and scored by Veith to make it 1-0 Big Red.

Just over two minutes into the fourth quarter, Denison doubled up its lead as Kate Hinshaw assisted the goal on the fourth shot of the game by Tumiwa.

In the end, Tumiwa finished with five total shot attempts while Veith had three and Kelly and Hano both had two. The Big Red finished with 16 total shots, including 10 on goal.

Goalkeeper Maren Kraak played all 60 minutes and earned the complete game shutout while her counterpart for the Gators, Reiger, did all she could with eight saves to try and keep her team in the game.

The Denison defense, however, limited Allegheny to only three shots for the entire game, two of which came in the first quarter, and only two penalty corners, both in the first half.

The Big Red will have less than 24 hours to rest up before their next game tomorrow against No. 17 Centre College at 11 a.m. on Sunday, September 12, at Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
