Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field hockey comes up just short against No. 17 Centre

GRANVILLE, Ohio. (September 12, 2021) – The Denison University field hockey team scored back-to-back goals in the first quarter to take a 2-1 lead, but from there, the Big Red were unable to keep their momentum going and ultimately fell 3-2 at home against No. 17 nationally-ranked Centre College on Sunday.

After the first goal by Centre (4-0 overall) less than four minutes into the game, Denison (1-3) found an answer as a penalty corner by AC Veith led to a score by Madeleine Hunt to tie it at 1-1 nine and a half minutes in.

Then under a minute later, the Big Red struck again as another penalty corner, this time by Hunt, led to a goal by Abigail Hano.

The two goals by Denison in the opening 15 minutes were the most goals Centre has allowed in a single game so far to start its season.

Unfortunately, Centre responded with seven shots and four penalty corners in the second quarter to tie the game again in the 25th minute, and then the Colonels took the lead for good with a score on a loose ball right in front of the goal in the 32nd minute.

The Big Red were held to only one shot attempt in each of the final three quarters of the game, but they did have a chance to tie it in the 57th minute, but a shot attempt by Hunt was saved by the Centre goalkeeper, Sienna Joseph.

Denison's goalkeeper, Maren Kraak, finished with five saves while playing all 60 minutes.

The finale of Denison's current three-game homestand will be at 11 a.m. against Wittenberg University on Saturday, September 18.
