Field hockey earns 10th straight win in series against Wittenberg

GRANVILLE, Ohio. (September 18, 2021) – The final game of a three-game homestand for the Denison University field hockey team ended with a 2-0 shutout win for the Big Red over Wittenberg University in nonconference action.

In addition to being the second win of the season for Denison (2-3 overall), it was the 10th win in a row for the Big Red against Wittenberg (4-2) dating back to the 2016 season.

Denison scored first in the 25th minute as after a shot by AC Veith was saved, Meg Baylis picked up the loose ball and tossed it into the open net.

At the break, Denison led 17-4 on total shot attempts, 7-2 on shots on goal and 9-1 on penalty corners.

The third quarter was more even with both teams having three shot attempts and three penalty corners, but in the fourth quarter, Denison held Wittenberg to without a shot or a penalty corner while adding to its lead on a goal by Caitlin Ahearn less than a minute in.

Wittenberg had previously outscored its opponents a combined 11-1 on its three-game winning streak entering the matchup with Denison on Saturday.

Kristin Kelly, Maya Tumiwa and Madeleine Hunt all had six shot attempts on the day while goalkeeper Maren Kraak made three saves and earned her second shutout of the year.

Up next, Denison will play at another conference opponent but in nonconference action as the Big Red head to Oberlin College for a 4:30 p.m. meeting on Wednesday, September 22.
