OBERLIN, Ohio. (September 22, 2021) –
Maya Tumiwa scored twice in the first seven minutes of the game and the Denison University field hockey team scored three more goals in the first quarter en route to capturing its first road win of the 2021 season, a 5-0 decision in nonconference action at Oberlin University.
Tumiwa scored first on an assist by
Kristin Kelly in the sixth minute, and then scored an unassisted goal just under a minute and a half later.
Denison scored three more times in the first quarter as Kelly added her second assist on a goal by
AC Veith in the 11th minute, and then
Madeleine Hunt scored twice in the final two minutes with her second goal coming on the assist by
Jess Joseph.
Tumiwa led Denison with five shot attempts, three of which were on goal, while Hunt had four and Kelly,
Hannah Lester and
Anna Van Dam each added three.
Just an impressive as the Big Red offense was their defense, which held Oberlin to without any shot attempts and to without any penalty corners.
Senior
Maren Kraak started in goal before freshman
Athena Joannou played the final three quarters.
Denison improved to 3-3 overall with the win while Oberlin, which has still yet to score this season, fell to 0-6. Denison has now won 22 straight games against Oberlin dating back to 2009, and has not allowed the Yeowoman to score against them in a span of nine matches (since 2015).
In one week, the Big Red will close out the first month of the season on the road at Ohio Wesleyan University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29.
