Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Coach Murphy earns 300th career win as women’s soccer is victorious in 2021 season opener

GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 3, 2021) – The Denison University women's soccer team not only claimed a 1-0 victory over George Fox University to start off its new 2021 season, but the Big Red also celebrated Gail Murphy's 300th career win as the head coach at Denison.

The Big Red showed strength on offense as they dominated possession in the first half and outshot the Bruins 17-6 overall and 7-3 on shots on goal. Sophomores Ellie Reiser and Callie Davis lead the team in shot attempts with four each.

Denison (1-0) proved dangerous on corner kicks as seven of its total shots and the solo goal of the match came from those offensive set pieces. George Fox (1-1) trailed behind with one lone corner kick.

Katie Livingston started her senior season off as the sole goal scorer of the match. During the 25th minute, Livingston headed the ball off a corner kick from junior teammate Amy Chiero. This goal was followed by 14 other attempts, but Livingston's finish was the only one to land a number on the scoreboard.

Senior goalie Patil Tcholakian held down the defensive side of the field with three saves.

The Big Red's win marks a historic 300th career win for Head Coach Gail Murphy. Coach Murphy now posts an impressive record of 300-119-44 at the start of her 25th season as head coach.

"This was our first official game since 2019, so to be out on the field together again was really special and to get the win made it that much sweeter," said Murphy. "It was a hard-fought match against a good George Fox team. We're looking forward to tomorrow's match and continuing to grow."

It will be a quick turnaround for Denison, which tomorrow (Sept. 4) hosts Alma College on 5 p.m. on Barclay-Thomsen Field.
