GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 3, 2021) – The Denison University field hockey team led 2-0 at the midway point in regulation, but was unable to hold off a second-half comeback by Rhodes College as the Big Red fell by a final score of 3-2 in double overtime during their 2021 season opener on Friday night inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.

The two first-half goals for Denison (0-1) both involved senior AC Veith, who scored the first goal of the season on a penalty stroke eight minutes into the game and then took the penalty corner and assisted on a goal just before halftime by Madeleine Hunt.

The Big Red outshot Rhodes 7-2 in the first half, but then in the second half the Lynx scored on their only shot attempt of the third quarter before putting up five shot attempts in the fourth and finding the equalizer with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.

In overtime, Denison outshot Rhodes 3-1 in the first 10 minutes but could not put home a game winner, and then in the second overtime Denison forced the Lynx goalkeeper to make two saves off shots by Abigail Hano and Ana Ortiz-DeRosa.

In the end, both goalkeepers, including Denison senior Maren Kraak, finished with five saves in 76 minutes of action.

Maya Tumiwa had a game-high five shots while Ortiz-DeRosa and Hunt each added four.

During the previous meeting between Denison and Rhodes, the game again went into overtime, but this time it was the Big Red coming out on top with a 2-1 victory after trailing 1-0 at halftime. The scripts were reversed this time around as it was the Lynx who overcame being shutout in the first half to come back and win it in extra time.

The Big Red will only have one day off to get ready for their next matchup as they travel to Lexington, Virginia, to take on Washington and Lee University at 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 5.
