DELAWARE, Ohio (September 25, 2021) – The Denison University men's soccer team failed to get on the board in its 2021 North Coast Athletic Conference opener at undefeated and No. 8 nationally-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday night.
Denison (4-3 overall, 0-1 NCAC) finished with 10 total shot attempts, but had only three on goal.
Vitor Rocha led the Big Red with three shots while
Lorenz Hoover had two and goalkeeper
Dylan Brown made four saves.
Ohio Wesleyan (6-0-2, 1-0-0) had eight shot attempts until Denison's first two of the match, which were by
Cameron McIntosh in the 25th minute and then
Jake Krueger in the 27th minute, and both of which resulted in saves.
Just over 40 seconds after Krueger's shot, the Battling Bishops got on the board. That first goal for OWU was assisted by Hector Gomez, who went on to score the second goal for the Battling Bishops in the 55th minute.
In the 39th minute, OWU's goalkeeper Mason Taylor had to make his third save of the first half to stop a header by
Rohan Tripathy after a Big Red corner kick.
In the second half, the Big Red had four shots, two of which were blocked, one of which went wide, and the final of which was by
Stuart Windell hitting the post in the 72nd minute.
"It was tough to drop our conference opener, but give credit to Ohio Wesleyan for a well-played game," spoke Denison's Head Coach
Brandon Bianco. "I was proud of our fight in the second half and am excited for us to take tonight as a learning opportunity for improvement."
In one week, Denison will host Allegheny College during Big Red Weekend at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, back home on Barclay-Thomsen Field.
