GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 22, 2021) – The Big Red had three players hit over .400 percent on the night as the Denison University volleyball team earned its fourth win overall in a row and third sweep in a row with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-11) victory over Heidelberg University at home on Wednesday.
Denison (8-4 overall) was led in kills by
Lucy Anderson with 12 on a .480 hitting percentage while
Sidney Gossard had 10 kills on a .455 hitting percentage and
Sophia Sobota added nine with a .409 percentage.
Setter
Kirby MacKinnon was stellar once again with 40 assists, and libero
Jenna Corrao was great as well with 24 digs. Carrao has now recorded 20-plus digs in five of her last six matches and eight times overall in 12 matches on the season.
In addition to matching her season-high in kills, Anderson also was very involved defensively, finishing with six blocks at the net. Also matching her season-high in kills for the Big Red was Gossard.
Denison led by only one midway through the first set at 16-15 before three straight attack errors by Heidelberg (8-4). The Big Red maintained at least a three-point lead the rest of the way and won the set on a 4-0 run both beginning and ending with a kill by Anderson assisted by MacKinnon.
The second set was then tied 16-16 before a 7-1 run for the Big Red featuring kills by four different players.
After hitting .324 percent as a team in the second set, the Big Red then turned up the pressure in the final set, hitting a crazy good .424 percent. That set was highlighted by a 10-0 run for Denison with
Payton McElfresh serving to make it 23-9.
The Big Red will now set their sights on the upcoming Denison Tri-Match featuring Denison, John Carroll University and Earlham College on Saturday, September 25. Denison will face John Carrol at 12 p.m. and then will come back a few hours later to play Earlham at approximately 4 p.m.
