GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 18, 2021) – The final match of a six-match homestand to open the 2021 season for the No. 17 Denison University women's soccer team ended on a sour note as the Big Red were defeated 3-1 by No. 16 Centre College in a battle of two nationally-ranked NCAA Division III teams.
It did not take long for Centre to get on the scoreboard as the Colonels scored less than nine minutes in.
Denison did manage five shots on goal in the first half to test the Centre goalkeeper Jonelle Barron, but she made each stop she had to until the Big Red's lone shot on goal of the second half. That did not come until the 79th minute when a cross by
Ariel Loevy found the feet of
Abby King, who spun around for the score to cut Denison's deficit in half at 2-1.
Unfortunately, Centre answered just over 30 seconds later with a penalty kick goal to get its lead back to two goals.
Callie Davis led the Big Red in shot attempts with three while
Amy Chiero added two. Meanwhile,
Patil Tcholakian made a season-high 10 saves in the net for Denison.
With the loss, Denison fell to 4-2 overall on the season while Centre improved to 6-1-1.
Next up will be Denison's first road match of the season. The Big Red will play at Ohio Northern University at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 22, in Ada, Ohio, before opening up North Coast Athletic Conference play on the road on Saturday, September 25, at Ohio Wesleyan University.
