Football improves to 2-0 in NCAC

OBERLIN, Ohio (September 18, 2021) – The Denison University football team improved to 2-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference action following its 59-12 victory at Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon.

It was the eighth straight win for Denison (2-1 overall, 2-0 NCAC) over Oberlin (0-3, 0-2) dating back to the 2013 season, and was the most points Denison has put up against Oberlin during that stretch.

In total, Denison put up 528 yards of offense, 303 of which came on the ground on 42 carries for an average of 7.2 yards per rush.

Quarterback Drew Dawkins only attempted nine passes on the entire game, but he completed six of them for 225 and three touchdowns.

Additionally, four different members of the Big Red had a least one rushing touchdown, led by Andrew Blanchard with 122 yards on 11 carries (11.1 average) and Trey Fabrocini with 97 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries (7.5 average).

After a 45-yard field goal by Pat Kramer on the first drive of the game for Denison, the Big Red trailed 6-3 after the first drive by the Yeomen went nine plays for 75 yards and ended with a blocked extra point attempt by Jonathan Bearden.

Then on the Big Red's very next possession, Denison scored only three plays into the drive thanks to a 65-yard touchdown pass from Dawkins to Aidan Brownlee on third-and-four. That would be the first of five Big Red scoring drives that lasted 85 seconds or less.

Denison scored again on its next drive, going 87 yards in seven plays as Fabrocini started the drive with a 28-yard rush and then ended it with a nine-yard carry for the score to make it 17-6 Big Red.

On the Big Red's second possession of the second quarter, Denison scored again on a long 53-yard touchdown run by Blanchard to make it 24-6.

The scoring run continued for Denison as the Big Red put up four touchdowns on four drives in the third quarter. Two of those touchdowns were passes of 32 yards and then 80 yards, respectively, from Dawkins, while the other two were rushing touchdowns by Fabrocini and Dawkins.

In the fourth quarter, Denison went to the ground game and on its first drive of the period, rushed it all 11 times for a 61-yard drive resulting in a 12-yard run by Jon Adamson to make it 59-6.

Defensively, Jeff Moore led the Big Red in tackles for the third week in a row to start the season, this time with eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Clay Denstorff had seven tackles and 1.5 sacks. Ryan Hallinan and Will Thomas both had six tackles, and Bearden and Michael Ballenger both added five.

Denison was also excellent on special teams as Kramer hit all eight of his extra point attempts and Thomas Gelorme put eight of his nine kickoffs into the endzone for a touchback.

Next up for the Big Red is a huge home game against Wittenberg University, which was one of the three teams, including Denison, that tied for first place in the NCAC back in 2019. That important matchup will take place under the lights at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 2, from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.
