GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 15, 2021) – The No. 17 Denison University women's soccer team outshot Trine University 24-5 overall and 13-3 on shots on goal, but it would not be enough as the Big Red suffered their first loss of the season with a 3-2 defeat against the Thunder on Barclay-Thomsen Field.
Denison (4-1 overall) had 11 different players take at least one shot and had eight take at least one shot on goal. The Big Red were led in shot attempts by
Callie Davis with six, three of which were on goal, and
Sophia Connell with four, two of which were on goal.
Trine (6-0-1) was the beneficiary of a hat trick by freshman forward Teresa Ashbrook, who entered the match already with eight goals scored on the season. All five of the Thunder's shots in the match came from Ashbrook. Additionally, the Thunder's junior goalkeeper Carmen Sweigard made 11 saves on the match.
After Ashbrook's first goal of the match in the 14th minute, Denison tied it up just before halftime as a cross from
Caroline Flynn from the right side deflected off Davis to
Amy Chiero, who came crashing in to finish off the score.
Denison had 15 shots, nine of which were on goal before finally cashing in less than three minutes before halftime. Conversely, Trine had only two shot attempts at the break.
Then after Ashbrook scored two more unassisted goals in the 69th and 80th minutes, the Big Red tried to rally late. In the 87th minute,
Dulcie Heyes scored off the rebound on a shot by Davis to make the score 3-2.
Next up for Denison will be a battle of two top-25 nationally ranked teams as the Big Red host No. 16 Centre College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 18. It will also be the end of a six-match homestand to open the season for Denison.
