SANDUSKY, Ohio (September 11, 2021) – The Denison University volleyball team defeated Albion College 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-21) and then fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17) against No. 8 Calvin College in its final two matches of the NCAC-MIAA Battle at the Point at the Cedar Point Sports Center.
In the win for Denison (4-4 overall) against Albion (5-3), the Big Red hit .333 percent in the second set, .444 percent in the third set and .391 in the final frame.
Sophia Sobota and
Daria Rodriguez both finished with 18 kills against the Britons while
Sidney Gossard added 10 and
Kirby MacKinnon dished out a very impressive 53 assists. Both Sobota and Rodriguez hit .333 percent while Gossard hit .375 percent.
The 53 assists for MacKinnon and 18 kills for Rodriguez were both career-highs while the 18 kills for Sobota tied her career-best effort as a sophomore.
Jenna Corrao and
Maddie Kurtz finished with 23 and 16 digs, respectively, while Rodriguez was only one dig shy of her third double-double of the year.
Against Calvin (8-1), Denison was paced by MacKinnon with 28 assists, Corrao with 21 digs and Sobota with 12 kills.
Set number one between the Big Red and the Knights was tied 18-18 before a 7-0 run to win it for Calvin. Denison then led 18-17 in set two before five straight points by Calvin.
The Big Red's next match will be on the road against Bluffton University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15, before they head to Wooster, Ohio, for two matches at the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic on Saturday, September 18.
