GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 11, 2021) – The Denison University women's soccer team led 2-0 at halftime, but in the end, the Big Red needed a goal by
Ellie Reiser with less than four minutes remaining in the match to pull out a 3-2 victory and hand Calvin College its first loss of the season on Saturday on Barclay-Thomsen Field.
It was the third one-goal victory for the Big Red in their first four matches of the new 2021 campaign.
Denison (4-0 overall) outshot Calvin (3-1) 9-1 in the first half while using goals from
Callie Davis in the 22nd minute and
Abby King in the 28th minute to take the two-goal lead into the intermission.
It was the third goal of the early part of the season for King and was the second in as many days for Davis. Both King and Davis led the Big Red offense with three total shot attempts and two shots on goal.
In the second half, however, Denison was held to only two shots and one corner kick while Calvin had six shots and five corner kick opportunities.
After the tying goal by Calvin in the 76th minute, Davis nearly had her second game-winning goal in a row with a shot to the bottom right in the 79th minute, but it was saved away.
Fortunately, Reiser broke through with the go-ahead goal in the early part of the 87th minute on the assist from
Amy Chiero, and there would be no more shot attempts over the final four minutes.
Patil Tcholakian returned in goal for the Big Red and earned the win while making two saves.
Denison still has two matches remaining in its six-match homestand to start the 2021 season. Both of those matches will come this next week as the Big Red host Trine University at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15, followed by a 2 p.m. kickoff with No. 19 Centre College on Saturday, September 18.
