Volleyball sweeps Marietta in 2021 season opener

GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 1, 2021) – GRANVILLE, Ohio (September 1, 2021) – The Denison University volleyball team got off to a great start in its new 2021 campaign, sweeping past Marietta College 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-12) on Wednesday night inside Livingston Gymnasium.

Denison (1-0) hit .298 percent for the night compared to .049 percent for Marietta (0-1) and come out on top in every statistical category: 42-19 on kills, 13-2 on service aces, 36-18 on assists, 43-29 on digs and 4-2 on blocks.

Denison took control up 11-6 in the first set after a 7-0 run and then made it 23-12 after a 9-0 stretch. The second set, however, was tied at 16-16 before the Big Red went on to win it on a 9-1 run. The third set was then 19-7 Denison after a 10-1 run.

Lucy Anderson led the Big Red offensively with 11 kills, while Daria Rodriguez also reached double digits with 10, and Sophia Sobota followed right behind by adding nine kills to the board. Anderson hit .381 percent and Sobota hit .348, but Corinne Boyd's six kills came on an extremely impressive .545 hitting percentage.

The dominant Denison offense did not stop there as Sophie Tight had 28 assists on the night. Additionally, Jenna Corrao contributed with five service aces as well.

Corrao also helped led the team defensively as she finished with 16 digs while Maddie Kurtz added 10 digs.

The Big Red will now head to the Ohio Northern University Invitational to play Hanover College at 5 p.m. on Friday, September 3, followed by Mount St. Joseph University at 1:30 p.m. and Muskingum University at 3:30 p.m. both on Saturday, September 4.
