SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Denison volleyball closed out their 2021 spring season on Friday evening, falling in their first match to Wittenberg, 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21, 14-16), before suffering a 3-0 loss (23-25, 18-25, 9-25) to the Tigers in the second match of the night at Pam Evans Smith Arena in Springfield.
Match 1
- After suffering back-to-back losses in the first and second sets (19-25, 22-25), Denison responded with a .314 kill percentage in the third set for a come-from-behind 26-24 win. The Big Red evened the match at 2-2 when they won the fourth set, 25-21, but the Tigers closed out the match with a 16-14 victory in the final set.
- Freshman Sophia Sobota led DU's offensive efforts with 18 kills and a .289 hit rate. Lucy Anderson and Emma Woerner followed with 12 kills each while Sophie Tight paced the Big Red with 42 assists and Jenna Corrao tallied a team-high 16 digs.
Match 2
- After the Big Red opened the first set with a 21-18 advantage, Wittenberg rallied for seven of the next nine points to take the first set, 25-23. The Tigers followed with back-to-back wins in the second and third sets (25-18, 25-9) to win their second match of the night and improve to 3-2. Both losses on the night closed out Denison's spring season at 2-4 overall.
- Sobota posted a team-best five kills in the second match while Woerner, Anderson, and Natalie Hutras tallied three kills each. Tight recorded 13 assists and eight digs in three sets and Maddie Kurtz added seven digs.
The Big Red closed out the abbreviated 2021 spring season with an overall record of 2-4.
