CLEVELAND, Ohio – Denison University athletics was recognized by the North Coast Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon as four different Denison male student-athletes were named NCAC Athletes of the Week for their respective sports.
Daniel Spencer,
Charlie Fleming (Baseball),
Angelo Ricci (Men's Track & Field), and
Luke Fisher (Men's Lacrosse) were all honored by the conference for their accomplishments on the field and on the track over this past weekend for the Big Red.
On the attack, Fisher made a name for himself very quickly for the Big Red after leading the DU offense to an 11-10 win over Ohio Wesleyan this past Saturday at Piper Stadium. Helping the Big Red avenge their previous loss to the Bishops earlier in the week, Fisher scored a career-high five goals against OWU, coming in as most goals scored by a Denison player against Ohio Wesleyan since
Spencer Butler scored 7 goals against the Bishops on April 27, 2019. Also adding two goals against the Bishops this past Wednesday, the Alexandria, Virginia native finished the week with seven goals on 16 shots through two games. He currently has nine goals in three games to start his college career.
On the diamond, Spencer and Fleming earned their first NCAC Players of the Week honors after helping the Big Red secure a four-game sweep of Ohio Wesleyan this past Friday and Saturday, April 2-3. On Friday night in Granville, Spencer finished the day with three hits in six at-bats with four runs scored, two RBIs, a double, and a walk, as Denison defeated OWU 9-1 in game one and 11-3 in game two. On Saturday in Delaware, Fleming stole the show for DU, pitching a complete-game shutout over seven innings of work with three hits, two walks, and nine strikeouts in the Big Red's 2-0 victory in game one of the doubleheader. The win improved his season record to 2-0 with 27 strikeouts and a 3.37 earned-run average. Spencer assisted Fleming on the offensive end in game one, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two doubles. On the season, Spencer is hitting .387 with 10 runs, three RBIs, and five doubles.
On the track, Ricci helped the Big Red men place second overall at the DU Quad Meet in Granville after notching a pair of event titles in the long jump and triple jump. He took first in the long jump with a new PR at 21'5.25" (6.53 meters), as well as in the triple jump at 42'8.25" (13.01 meters). He also teamed up with
Shin Yano,
Grant Plasch, and
Justin Wolfe in the 4X100 to take third place at 44.09. Earning his second NCAC Athlete of the Week honor of the year, Ricci is currently undefeated in the long jump and triple jump through the first two meets of the outdoor season, after also winning both events at the Wooster Tri-Meet on March 27.
