DELAWARE, Ohio – Denison softball traveled to Delaware, Ohio on Friday evening where they played to a doubleheader split with Ohio Wesleyan University at Margaret Sagan Field. After suffering a 13-5 loss in the first game, the Big Red rallied in game two for a 15-13 victory over the Bishops.
Game 2
- Denison took command through the first three innings of game two, led by a trio of home runs from Jessica Hopkins, Lexi Knipp, and Caitlin Ellwanger, giving DU a 5-3 lead entering the fourth.
- Trailing OWU 6-5 in the fifth, Denison came out swinging with eight runs on eight hits and RBI doubles from Hopkins, Maggie Ballentine, Claire Powell, Knipp, and Ellwanger. Denison carried a 13-7 lead into the sixth.
- After the Bishops tacked on three more runs in the sixth, Denison added a pair of runs in the seventh with a double from Taylor Faulkenberg and a single from Knipp, helping the Big Red hold off Ohio Wesleyan for their fourth win of the season. OWU dropped to 2-1 with the loss.
- Knipp finished the game 5-for-5 with four runs, four RBIs, a double, and a home run. Ellwanger and Sam Kline each tallied three hits in the game, while Hopkins also tied for the team lead with four RBIs.
Game 1
- In the opening game of the day, the Big Red took early control of the contest when Powell notched a solo home run down the right field line to give DU a 1-0 lead. Denison stayed red-hot in the second inning thanks to a pair of RBI doubles from Knipp and Ballentine, helping the Big Red build a 5-0 lead in the top of the second.
- The Bishops responded in the home half of the second with six runs on five hits on their way to 13-unanswered runs through the next four innings as OWU improved to 2-0 on the season.
- Knipp and Powell each went 1-for-3 in game one with a run batted in. Ballentine led DU with two RBI in a 1-for-3 effort and Gabi Dufresne went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
- Faulkenberg started in the circle for Denison and allowed three earned runs on five hits over two innings of work with two strikeouts.
Denison will return to action on Saturday, April 3 when they welcome Ohio Wesleyan to Granville for a doubleheader set to begin at 1 p.m. Game two will follow at approximately 3 p.m. The Denison Sports Network will provide a live video stream of both games at
