OWU takes two from Big Red

GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison softball suffered a pair of losses to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday evening at the Denison Softball Field in Granville, falling in game one, 13-8, before dropping game two, 11-0.
  • In game one, the Bishops jumped out to an early 3-1 through the first two innings of play. In the third inning, the Big Red accounted for five runs on four hits when Caitlin Ellwanger connected on an RBI single and Jessica Hopkins cleared the bases with a double, giving Denison a 6-3 lead after three.
  • After OWU countered with four runs in the top of the fourth, Denison responded with another RBI from Ellwanger and an RBI double from Taylor Faulkenberg to put DU back in front, 8-7.
  • With the game tied at 8-8 in the top of the seventh, Ohio Wesleyan added five runs on three hits, including a two-run triple from Rylee Anspach, to outpace the Big Red in the final inning and move to 4-4 on the season.
  • Faulkenberg and Maggie Ballentine each finished with 3-for-4 efforts while combing for five runs and two RBI. Hopkins led DU with three runs batted in and Gabi Dufresne went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
  • In game two, the Bishops carried a 4-0 lead through the first four innings before adding three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth, holding the Big Red to five hits and closing the game out in six innings. The loss sent Denison to 6-12 while OWU improved to 5-4.
  • Sam Kline led Denison in game two with a 2-for-3 showing, while Ellwanger, Noelle Chovanec, and Abby Arabia each added a hit.
Denison and Ohio Wesleyan will square off again this Saturday, April 17 when the Big Red travel to Delaware, Ohio for a doubleheader with the Bishops beginning at 1 p.m.
