GRANVILLE, Ohio – Denison's lone senior
Zyah Beal scored 15 points in her final performance at Livingston Gymnasium, but the Big Red rally was cut short as Wittenberg held off DU 61-58 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in Granville.
With the Tigers leading by as many as eight in the fourth quarter, Denison continued to chip away in the final three minutes of regulation after
Camm Mack connected on a pair of free throws and
Francesca Sileo buried a triple to cut the Big Red's deficit to three, 55-52. After Sileo added a free throw with 1:08 to play, Beal added to her senior night showing with a pair of game-tying free throws with 31 seconds to play to make it a tie game, 55-55, heading to overtime.
After Wittenberg scored the first six points in overtime and took a 61-55 lead, sophomore
Gabby Elliott made it a one-score game with less than a minute to play when she tallied her first three of the game and gave Denison a chance down 61-58.
With 13 seconds to play, WU's Samantha Wyatt turned the ball over to DU, giving the Big Red one final shot. Following a missed triple from Elliott, an offensive board from
Hannah Wynn kept the possession alive, but Elliott and the Big Red were unable to tie the game on the last shot, sending Denison to a final record of 2-6 in 2021. Wittenberg ended their campaign at 5-3 overall.
Beal's 15 points led DU's scoring effort on the day while also adding four assists. Sileo matched her career-high with 10 points and chipped in four rebounds. Sophomore
Mikaila Carpenter totaled nine points and 11 rebounds and Elliott and
Isa Contreras each added seven points.
