Softball forces series split with Terriers

GRANVILLE, Ohio- For the second-straight day, Denison and Hiram split a softball doubleheader. Sunday's tilt took place on Denison's campus and after an 8-5 loss in game one, the Big Red rallied for a 9-1 win in the night cap.

Game 1
  • Denison took a 4-0 lead in the second inning behind an RBI double from Gabbi Dufresne and an RBI single by Claire Powell.
  • Hiram stormed back with an 8-run fifth inning fueled by six Terrier hits and three errors on the Big Red.
  • Five of the eight runs that scored in the fifth inning for Hiram were unearned.
  • Taylor Faulkenberg took the loss in relief of Noelle Chovanec.
  • Powell led the Denison offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Game 2
  • Denison led 4-1 after four innings. Maggie Ballentine's 2-run single in the fourth gave the home team a three run advantage.
  • Denison forced the run-rule into effect with a five-run fifth inning. After opening with two walks, Lexie Knipp blasted a two-run double.
  • With two outs and two runners on, Dufresne ended the game with a triple to the wall in center field. That scored Claire Wolff and Caitlin Ellwanger. A throwing error on the shortstop's relay to home plate allowed Dufresne to come around and score the ninth and final run of the game.
  • Sophia Parpala got the win, pitching five innings. She allowed only four hits and no earned runs while striking out three.

Denison (3-7) returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan to open North Coast Athletic Conference play with an afternoon doubleheader.  Ohio Wesleyan will provide a live video broadcast beginning at 3:30 p.m.
