GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Despite a career-high 13 points from freshman
Ava Warcaba, the Big Red were unable to leave Greencastle, Ind. with the victory as Denison women's basketball suffered a 67-61 loss to No. 7 DePauw on Saturday afternoon at Neal Fieldhouse.
Two days after the Tigers left Granville with a 62-41 win, the Big Red opened Saturday's contest looking for revenge as they outscored DePauw 20-15 in the first quarter behind a trio of threes from
Gabby Elliott,
Isa Contreras, and
Natalie Hutras.
After Denison led by as many as 10 (25-15) in the first half, the Tigers returned the favor in the second quarter when freshman Sarah Isaf tallied 13 points off the bench, including 3-for-4 from three, to help DePauw outscore the Big Red 22-15 and a take a 37-35 lead into the break.
Trailing the Tigers by two entering the second half, the Big Red received early third-quarter production on a jumper from
Mikaila Carpenter and a triple off the hands of freshman
Francesca Sileo, making it a 42-40 Denison deficit with less than six minutes to play in the frame. Isaf and Maeve Summerville connected on the next eight points for DePauw, but Carpenter and Warcaba stayed aggressive on offense for DU as they combined for Denison's next six points to only trail the Tigers by five, 51-46, with one quarter to play.
Entering the fourth, the Tigers opened the quarter on an 11-5 scoring run thanks to five of Isaf's game-high 24 points as DePauw built their lead to 11, 62-51, with 4:16 remaining in the game. Following a timeout, Warcaba buried a bucket to cut the Big Red deficit to single digits, and less than two minutes later, Contreras connected from the perimeter to make it a seven-point game, 65-58, with 2:02 to play.
With 1:06 remaining, DePauw's Grace Kinsey finished a layup that put the Tigers ahead by nine, and despite a last-second three-pointer from Elliott, the Big Red were unable to close the gap as they suffered their fourth loss of the season. DePauw improved to 4-0 in 2021.
Warcaba's team-high 13 points came on 5-of-8 from the field in 14 minutes off the bench. Carpenter and Sileo each added nine points for the Big Red while Carpenter posted six rebounds and Sileo finished with three assists. Elliott followed with eight points and Contreras chipped in six points and five boards off the bench.
Isaf led all scorers with 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-13 from beyond the arc. Kinsey added 15 points and four assists for the Tigers while Hayley Cange posted a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebounds.
The Big Red will return to action next Friday, Feb. 19 when they travel to the College of Wooster for a 7 p.m. tip-off with the Fighting Scots. There are no spectators permitted at Timken Gymnasium, but Wooster
