Men’s basketball comes back to earn first conference win at DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Ind. (December 1, 2021) – The Denison University men's basketball team trailed by 11 points at halftime, but outscored DePauw University by 20 in the second half to finish with an 83-74 win on the road for its first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the 2021-22 season.

Denison (2-5 overall, 1-1 NCAC) shot 50 percent or better both from the field and from three in both halves while holding DePauw (3-3, 1-1) to only 27 points on 32.35 percent (11-34) shooting from the field and 25 percent (3-12) shooting form three in the second half.

The Big Red trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half (26-11 with 13:25 left), and then trailed 47-36 at the break as the Tigers closed the opening 20 minutes on a 13-5 run.

Then to start the second half, Denison began to turn the tide as a 9-0 run starting with a 3-pointer by Tyler Miller made it only a two-point game at 53-51 with 12:02 left to play.

Two minutes later, a 3-pointer by Ricky Radtke gave Denison the lead for the first time in the game up 56-55 with 10 minutes to go.

The lead then changed five more times over the next four-plus minutes until a 3-pointer by Scotty Dean made it 68-66 Big Red with 5:20 left.

Kevin Cheng followed with a 3-pointer of his own and two free throws to make it 73-66 Denison with 3:53 on the clock, but then the Tigers got back to within two at 73-71 with three minutes to go. From there, however, DePauw missed each of its next five shots while the Big Red went on an 8-0 run featuring six made free throws to make it a 10-point game at 81-71 in the final 30 seconds.

In all, Denison made 10 free throws in the final four minutes of the game and was 14-for-19 from the free throw line in the second half compared to two makes on four attempts from the line in the second half for DePauw.

Miller, a freshman from Hudson, Ohio, finished with a career-high 27 points on 9-for-11 shooting overall, 5-for-6 shooting from three and 4-for-4 shooting from the free throw line to lead the Big Red.

Radtke, a freshman from Willoughby, Ohio, was next with 13 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double in three games, and he added five assists for the second game in a row.

Freeman Brou added 12 points, Darren Rubin had 10, and Dean and Cheng both finished with nine points.

Now, Denison will return home for back-to-back conference games against Ohio Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, and against Hiram College at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8.
