CHICAGO, Ill. (November 20, 2021) – The Denison University men's basketball team lost 74-59 against Pomona-Pitzer in its first game at the University of Chicago Midway Classic.
Freeman Brou led Denison (0-4 overall) with 13 points on 50 percent (6-12) shooting from the field while
Ricky Radtke added 11 points and six rebounds.
One of the biggest differences in the game was the Big Red being outrebounded 48-26 overall and 14-5 on the offensive glass, leading to a 14-3 advantage on second chance points for Pomona-Pitzer (2-1).
The Big Red finished the first half with a corner 3-pointer at the buzzer by
Scotty Dean assisted by
John Faller, but it was only their second three of the game to that point as Denison trailed 40-24.
Pomona-Pitzer shot 46.2 percent (12-26) from the field in the first half compared to 30 percent (9-30) for Denison, and the Sagehens were also 13-for-13 from the free throw line while outrebounding the Big Red 25-12 over the first 20 minutes.
Just before the 14-minute mark in the game, a big block by Brou led to a transition 3-pointer by
Darren Rubin for his first points of the game to that point, cutting the Denison deficit to 13 points at 48-35.
A free throw by
Dre Rodgers with 13 and a half minutes left then made it a 12-point game at 48-36.
Denison got back to within 12 points again at 56-44 with 10 minutes left after another three by Rubin and then two free throws by
Tyler Miller. Unfortunately, two 3-pointers by the Sagehens made it an 18-point game at 64-56 with only seven minutes to go as the Big Red never got closer than within 12 in the second half.
Denison did outscore Pomona-Pitzer 35-34 in the second half.
Now, the Big Red will battle against Willamette University during the final day of the University of Chicago Midway Classic on Sunday, November 21.
