GAMBIER, Ohio. (October 9, 2021) – For the second time in three days, the Denison University field hockey team won 3-1 on the road in North Coast Athletic Conference action, this time defeating Kenyon College.
After Denison took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game on a goal by
Maya Tumiwa working the left side of the field and shooting from a tough angle near the end line, Kenyon tied it with only a minute and a half left before halftime on a shot off the left post.
Fortunately, it did not take very long for the Big Red to retake the lead as after a high shot by Tumiwa off a penalty corner,
Ana Ortiz-DeRosa reached up to knock in the goal roughly seven minutes into the third quarter, and less than 10 minutes after Kenyon had tied it.
Then in the 53rd minute, Oritz-DeRosa drove the right side of the field and assisted on a goal by
Grace Lock from the left side to give the Big Red some breathing room for the final seven minutes.
Both teams finished with exactly 12 shots and seven penalty corners while Denison held a slight 7-6 lead on shots on goal and had a 5-4 advantage on saves.
Maren Kraak made each of those saves for the Big Red, including making two saves in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter to preserve Denison's 1-0 lead at the time.
Tumiwa led the Big Red with four total shots, three of which came in the first quarter, while
Madeleine Hunt, Lock and Ortiz-DeRosa each had two shots.
Denison improved to 2-0 in the NCAC and got back to .500 overall on the season at 5-5 while Kenyon dropped to 1-1 in the conference and 7-4 overall. The win kept Denison as just one of two teams left in the NCAC with an unbeaten conference record.
Denison will wrap up a three-game stretch of road games to open conference play with their second meeting this year with Allegheny College. The Big Red and the Gators will square off at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 15, in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
