Big Red win third straight road game to start conference play

MEADVILLE, Pa. (October 15, 2021) – The Denison University field hockey team won 2-1 on the road at Allegheny College on Friday evening. Madeleine Hunt assisted on both of Denison's goals while Cary Mauck had a goal and an assist and Kristin Kelley had the game-winning goal.

It was the third straight North Coast Athletic Conference win for Denison, all three of which have been on the road. Denison improved to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC while Allegheny fell to 5-7 and 0-4.

Early in the second quarter, the Big Red earned a pair of penalty corners in the first two and a half minutes of the period and were able to convert on the second one as Hunt passed it to the top of the circle to Mauck, who took a couple of steps to her right and rolled the ball past the defense.

Maren Kraak made her lone save of the match in the 24th minute and then in the 38th minute, Denison fired three shots by Maya Tumiwa, Caitlin Ahearn and Abigail Hano, each of which were saved by Allegheny goalkeeper Hallie Reiger.

With 8:21 left to play, Allegheny tied it up with a goal after a penalty corner of its own, but the Big Red were not to be outdone as less than a minute later, Denison earned its seventh penalty corner of the game.

From there, Hunt took the penalty corner and passed it to Mauck, who this time passed it to her left to Kelley, who finished with the score to put the Big Red back ahead by one with 7:27 on the clock.

In all, the Big Red outshot the Gators 14-3 overall and 10-2 on shots on goal, and had eight penalty corners compared to two for Allegheny.

After playing its first three conference games of 2021 on the road, Denison will now play three straight at home beginning with a quick turnaround against Ohio Wesleyan University tomorrow, October 16, at 5:30 p.m. inside Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
