Hano scores twice as Denison field hockey wins conference opener

WOOSTER, Ohio (October 7, 2021) – The Denison University field hockey team won its first North Coast Athletic Conference contest of the 2021 season with a 3-1 victory on the road at the College of Wooster.

Each of Denison's first two goals came early within their respective quarters. Abigail Hano scored first one minute into the second quarter, and then Meg Baylis scored two and a half minutes into the third quarter to make it 2-0.

Wooster finally scored in the 51st minute, but had only two shots for the game, both by Syd Schuster and the first of which was saved by Maren Kraak back in the first quarter. Kraak played the first three quarters in goal before freshman Athena Joannou entered for the final 15 minutes.

Then in the final two and a half minutes, Hano scored her second goal of the game, this time on the assist by Grace Lock.

The Big Red finished with 18 shots in total and 12 shots on goal, and were led by Hano and Maya Tumiwa with five shots apiece.

With the win, Denison improved to 4-5 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC while Wooster fell to 5-4 and 1-1.

The Big Red will have two more road games before playing their first conference game at home this season. Denison will battle Kenyon College at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 9, in Gambier, Ohio, before taking on Allegheny College at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 15, in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
