Field hockey drops final road game of regular season

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio. (October 27, 2021) – Despite a pair of goals by Madeleine Hunt, the Denison University field hockey team fell on the road for the only time this season in North Coast Athletic Conference play, dropping a 3-2 decision at Wittenberg University on Wednesday.

The Big Red are now 8-7 overall and 5-2 in the NCAC and saw their 10-game winning streak against Wittenberg (10-7, 4-3) come to an end. Additionally, Denison is now on the outside looking in when it comes to the top spot in the NCAC field hockey standings.

The Big Red had three penalty corners in the third minute of the game and scored four minutes in when AC Veith took the third penalty corner, leading to the first goal by Hunt.

Maren Kraak made two saves in the final three minutes of the first quarter, but then Wittenberg scored twice off penalty corners in the second quarter to take the lead.

Hunt and the Big Red wasted very little time coming back and tying it two minutes into the second half as after a penalty corner by Hunt, Ana Ortiz DeRosa got the ball back to Hunt for her second goal of the game.

However, the Tigers had the answer again less than two minutes into the fourth quarter to retake the advantage.

Three minutes after that, Abigail Hano had a shot saved by Emma Hurgy, and then Hano again had a shot saved in the 55th minute before Jess Joseph shot wide.

Sarah Stratenus had a shot blocked in the 58th minute, and then with the time winding down, Denison was awarded a final penalty corner with only eight seconds left, but Maya Tumiwa's shot was just wide left.

In all, Hurgy made eight saves for Wittenberg while Kraak had four for Denison as the Big Red outshot the Tigers 20-9 overall.

Next up, Denison's Senior Day and regular-season finale will be against Oberlin College at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium.
