Field hockey victorious on Senior Day

GRANVILLE, Ohio. (October 30, 2021) – The Denison University field hockey team defeated Oberlin College 2-0 during its Senior Day to win what was also the Big Red's final game of the 2021 regular season.

It was Senior Day for Maren Kraak, Hannah Lester, Maya Tumiwa and AC Veith while Denison's Student First Aider Carson Wood was also recognized as part of the festivities before the game.

field-hockey-senior-dayAll four Big Red seniors earned the start on Saturday while the goalkeeper, Kraak, improved to 9-7 in goal and earned her fifth shutout of the season. Tumiwa would finish with seven total shots, three shots on goal and an assist; Veith added six shots, all of which were on goal; and Lester helped contribute to a Big Red defensive effort that kept Oberlin to without a shot attempt on the day.

Maren Kraak has played in 29 games in her career and has started all 16 this year at goalkeeper. In addition to scoring one goal in 2019, Maren has played 906 minutes in goal this year with 55 saves. She was named to both the 2019-20 and the 2020-21 NCAC Academic Honor Roll.

Hannah Lester has played in 22 games in her career, and this season, she has stared six games with four starts in a row to end the regular season. She recorded her first career assist on October 23 of this year during Denison's 3-0 win over DePauw University.

Maya Tumiwa has appeared in 50 games in her career, starting 41 times, including 12 times this season. She has logged 16 goals, seven assists and four game-winning goals in her career. This season alone, she has amassed five goals and two assists. Maya was named Honorable Mention All-NCAC in 2019 after totaling seven goals, three assists, and three multi-goal performances on the season.

AC Veith has appeared in 58 games in her career, starting 52, including all 16 this year. She has totaled 11 goals, 12 assists and four game-winning goals in her career, and has three goals and two assist this year. AC was named Second-Team All-NCAC in 2019 after starting all 21 games and totaling four goals with four assists. As a freshman, she tallied four goals and tied for the team lead with six assists, and she scored the game-winning goal in the NCAC Tournament Championship against Wooster. She was named the NCAC Tournament MVP during both the 2018 and 2019 seasons, and was named to both the 2019-20 and the 2020-21 NCAC Academic Honor Roll.

field-hockey-senior-dayDenison outshot Obelrin 22-0 overall, 15-0 on shots on goal and had 11 penalty corners to zero for the Yeowoman on Saturday.

Both of the Big Red's goals came thanks to great passing after a penalty corner.

In the 13th minute, Madeleine Hunt took the penalty corner and passed it to Abigail Hano, who then passed it across to Kristin Kelley for the first goal.

Then in the first minute of the second half, another penalty corner by Hunt was passed to Veith, who passed it to the top of the arc to Caitlin Ahearn, who sent it into the middle of the box to Tumiwa, who then got it back to Hunt stepping in for the second goal.

Denison is now 9-7 overall and 6-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Oberlin fell to 0-16 and 0-8.

The Big Red will now set their sights on the NCAC Tournament with the semifinals scheduled for Tuesday, November 2. Denison, which is looking to defend its string of three straight NCAC Tournament crowns, will have to wait to see which seed it receives for the conference tournament.
