HIRAM, Ohio (October 26, 2021) – Senior
Abby King scored twice and fellow-senior
Patil Tcholakian recorded her seventh shutout of the season as the Denison University women's soccer team defeated Hiram College 3-0 on the road to clinch first place in the North Coast Athletic Conference women's soccer standings.
In addition to earning its seventh win in a row and sixth shutout win during that stretch, Denison (11-3 overall, 7-0 NCAC) also captured its conference-best 11th NCAC regular-season title in program history and its second regular-season title in the last three full seasons (2018).
The Big Red fired six of the first eight shot attempts of the match and nine of the 12 shots in the first half, but it was not until the 54th minute when a great run down the sideline and cross by
Amy Chiero found King for her first goal.
Less than three minutes later, Chiero made another great run with the ball and nearly scored herself, but just missed wide right.
In the 67th minute, a throw in by
Kate Dalimonte led to a cross by
Ellie Reiser that found King, who's first shot attempt was saved before getting the rebound and finishing with her second goal of the night.
King now leads the team with seven goals on the year while the assist for Chiero on the first goal was her team-best fourth assist of the season.
Sophomore
Callie Davis then scored her fifth goal of the season to make it 3-0 in the 75th minute.
To start the second half, Denison's reigning NCAC Athlete of the Week,
Patil Tcholakian, had to make two saves in the first five minutes to keep the match scoreless before Chiero and King connected to put the Big Red on the board.
Tcholakian finished the match with three saves while her counterpart, Skyler Huda, did her best to keep Hiram in the match by making four saves in the first half and 13 saves overall.
Denison finished with 19 shots in the second half and 28 for the match. King finished with eight total shots and five shots on goal, Davis finished with five shots,
Sophia Connell had four and
Eliza Roach had three.
The Big Red will play one more match on the road to close out their regular season as Denison travels to the College of Wooster for a 1 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, October 30, in its regular-season finale.
