DU completes opening day of NCAC Championship

After seven events, the Denison men's track and field team sits seventh with 13 points at the 2015 North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championship hosted by Ohio Wesleyan.

Wabash leads the nine-team field after day one with 88 points, while the host Bishops are second with 57 tallies. DePauw sits third after scoring 38 points, while Allegheny (24), Wooster (16), Wittenberg (14), Denison, Kenyon (10) and Oberlin (10) round out the team standings.

The Big Red opened the scoring in the first running event of the day. Sophomore Drake Lohnes got DU on the board with an eighth-place performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Lohnes crossed the line in 9:58.32. Junior Ryan Keller took 11th in the event with a time of 10:24.49.

Junior Bryan Fowler added two points to the Denison total after placing seventh in the javelin. Fowler earned his points with a mark of 153'4" in his first throw of the prelims. The Big Red racked up its largest point total in the final event on Friday, the 10,000-meter run. Junior Sam Beech paced DU in the event with his first-ever all-conference performance. Beech posted the third-fastest time after checking in at 32:33.72. Sophomore Jake Dennie earned his second All-NCAC honor and first individual accolade with a fifth-place finish in the 10K. Dennie crossed the finish line in 32:41.85.

In addition to the events that went final on Friday, the Big Red also competed in three preliminary races. Denison had three competitors advance to the finals on Saturday. Junior Quenton Richards was the first person to move on to Saturday's competition. Richards took eighth in the 100-meter dash prelim after clocking in at 11.19. The junior sprinter just missed out on the 200 dash final after taking ninth in Friday's prelim (22.76).

The other two runners that moved on to Saturday did so in the 800-meter run. Junior Mitch Keller recorded the fourth-best time in the event at 1:56.39. Freshman Chris Todd also advanced to tomorrow's final with a time of 1:57.84.

The Big Red will wrap up the 2015 NCAC Outdoor Championship on Saturday at the George Gauthier Track in Delaware, Ohio. Field events will begin at 10 a.m., while the first running event is slated to start at 2:15 p.m.
