Denison opens season at W&L-VMI Carnival

The Denison Big Red kicked off the outdoor track and field season on Friday at the 2012 Washington & Lee-Virginia Military Institute Carnival.

On Friday, the bulk of Denison's track athletes competed in the 1500-meter run.  Junior Jacob Ott led the charge with a time of 4:31.98, while sophomore Connor Ford clocked in at 4:35.20.  Rookies Jordan Dekel and Bob Ziske finished the event in 4:50.17 and 5:03.88, respectively.  In the 5000, John Williamson finished 36th with a time of 16:29.27, while Chris Dunn and Steven Johnson finished in 16:44.82 and 16:50.91, respectively.

The 4x400 relay team of Win Fox, Ivanhoe Hall, Stephen Czujko and Joe Thackery finished 10th with a time of 3:38.59.

In the field events, senior Wendell Taylor finished 23rd in the hammer throw and 24th in the discus.  Taylor threw the hammer 108'1" and tossed the discus 111'5".  In his first action since last spring, junior Joe Nichols took 19th in the long jump with a leap of 19'0.50".

The Big Red closes out the two-day W&L-VMI Carnival on Saturday.  Field events are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., while track events are slated to start at 10 a.m.
